What Believers Believe
The common belief among most people is that followers of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam worship the same God, who is usually referred to as the Abrahamic God. When most people think of the three religious traditions, they tend to focus on the similarities and common characteristics between them.
First and last, they believe in the doctrine of monotheism and have common historical and heritage roots, but behind these similarities hide fundamental differences in their perception of God, and these differences are the subject of our discussion today.
I will try to convince you that there is no such thing as the Abrahamic God by taking a look at the nature and characteristics of God as depicted by each of these religions.
The books of the Torah show several contradictions regarding the God of the Jews. Sometimes you fi nd talk of one God and other times of multiple gods, and he is referred to by different names (Elohim, El, Elyon, Adonai, Shaddai, Ahya, Yahweh).
Before we discuss the image of this god, let us fi rst try to understand these contradictions in the Torah by taking a look at the history of this god.
The evolution of the Jewish gods
Let us see how it came into existence and how it developed until it took the form it has today. Some mistakenly believe that the Jews, since their appearance in history, worshipped one God and were distinguished from the peoples of the ancient world by being monotheists who worshipped the god Yahweh. However, this was never the case from the beginning. The Jewish religion is the product of a gradual development that continued for thousands of years, and Yahweh did not become the monotheistic god that we know until 2,600 years ago.
Before that, the Jews worshipped multiple gods, as did the peoples surrounding them in Canaan and Babylon. The Jews in particular worshipped the gods of the Canaanites more than 2000 years before Christ.
